One of the babies should be looking at the photographer/observer. Copy is no good either…it should be more explicit, especially when using a ‘grotesque’ image. “Hungry kids should not be left to fend for themselves. You can help.”

Bergman said,

November 23, 2006 @ 4:14 am

@norm
No, that would have taken the edge off the picture. The creator of this ad managed to avoid the usual pitfalls. First, in making the picture itself a striking statement that persists to tell our brains this is a lieteral, truthful account the world. A glaze towards the observer would have broken this fiction.

Second, the copy reinforces us to believe in fiction of the picture by challenging us to tell who will feed them. The call to action is created in the observer when this account of “truth” meets the observer´s ethical faculties.

Wow, great analysis Bergman!

Sadly it takes the stark reality of such a photo to make the point that the need is so great.

The Global society especially in the west with its (S.U.V.) mentality has lost site of the fact that other in the world still suffer to have the basics of food , shelter, clothing, water,and warmth.

Over all opinion.. “A good work of art” that makes a point!

I understand the impact needed to have a great marketing effect but is there any integrity left. Exploiting human suffering by taking an extreme photograph just seems so absurd!

We’d like to use a distorted version of this picture for an album cover. Our band is not big at all and it will not be distributed. We are just a garage band. jonatkins1986@hotmail.com
