VISA: Go Back to Pompeii

To raise awareness of Visa’s sponsorship of the Pompeii exhibit at our National Museum, we greeted all visitors to Wellington Airport with a lava flow that ran around the baggage carousel. Complemented by traditional media, this ambient execution made sure nobody could miss our message.

A good viral idea, very memorable. But it has nothing to do with Pompeii’s history.

Pompeii isn’t a lava volcano. It erupted with ash and pumice, burying the city 20m deep. The ash is what allowed archaeologists to uncover the whole city, intact, and to also take casts of the inhabitants in their final locations.

If it had been lava, the town would have burned. It would not have been preserved. There would be NO exhibit at the National Museum if it had be lava. Pompeii would have been irrelevant in history if it had been lava.

Since this is for a museum exhibit, I would expect the advertisers to stick to the facts. Very disappointing.
