For further information contact: info@tyrannybook.com

Amnesty International Portugal and Leo Burnett Iberia launched Tyrannybook, a social network dedicated to the surveillance of some of the world leaders who violate Human Rights the most. By building a global community of Human Rights defenders, this nonprofits organization aims to get more involved in the social networks during this year 2010, not only to gain the visibility inherent to the web platform, but also to facilitate the contact between the causes it promotes and the public. Thus was born Tyrannybook, a network that aims to generate a global consciousness about the countless atrocities that take place here and there across the globe. Using a following system, the users can be updated about the faults committed by those leaders against the well known and recognised Human Rights. Released by Amnesty, the profiles of the tyrants are updated both by the organization itself and by the users, according to the current situation of the countries where they lead. However, as time goes by, it will expand by the addition of new profiles from the Amnesty. It’s up to each user to decide which leaders they are most interested to watch. Between them, users can even become allies, exchanging points of view and discussing current issues. This is the first version of the site. And like every social network, it will grow and be constantly updated with new tools and functions. The Tyrannybook will gain size and presence on the web each week that passes. In this first phase there are ten tyrants in the site: Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan, Kim Jong Il of North Korea, Than Shwe of Myanmar, Hu Jintau of China, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Thomas Lubanga Dyilo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Radovan Karadzic of Serbia, Aleksandr Lukashenka of Belarus and Ramzan Akhmadovich Kadyrov of Chechnya. Taking advantage of the visibility of this kind of social networks, Amnesty hopes to get more support to the causes it promotes. Inside the Tyrannybook all its action are reported and have a direct link to Amnesty International – Portugal’s official website. There the users can get more information on how they can help promote Human Rights. This project was developed by Leo Burnett Iberia.

Abrinq Foundation: Vending Machiners

During the month of February, users of the subway in São Paulo can help Abrinq Foundation take the children of the streets through the book’s vending machines located in five subway stations. The “vending machine of good” created by Giovanni+Draftfcb in partnership with the 24X7 Cultural, aims to raise funds for Abrinq Foundation through donations.

The campaign works as follows: a row exclusive on the vending machine was dedicated to the Abrinq Foundation. Here, we see pictures of children holding cards of $ 1.00, $ 2.00 and $ 5.00. The main title explains: “With your help we can get these children of the streets”. Just insert the money in the machine and remove the chosen child who, in fact, is a showcase of the institution giving thanks. Click here to see the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riTM9tcIzyA

Founded in 1990, the Abrinq Foundation is a nonprofit institution that aims at raising awareness about issues related to the rights of children and adolescents, promoting human rights and citizenship. The Foundation’s challenge for 2010 is to serve 300 thousand children.

Amnesty International: Insomnia

To mobilise public opinion for human rights, it takes some effort to be heard. With its new film « Insomnia », created by agency Rapp and directed by Jeremy Halkin, Amnesty International invites everyone to take part in events organized for the Amnesty nights. The more people get involved, the more noise they’ll make… and the less leaders of certain countries will be able to sleep with a clear conscience. So turn up the volume!

Amnesty International in Germany celebrated the 60th anniversary of human rights in 2008 with “Frau im Koffer”, an ambient advertising campaign at German airports. “Woman in Suitcase” stunt involved putting a woman in a transparent suitcase and sending her around the baggage carousel with what appeared to be official airport stickers. Upon closer inspection airline passengers discovered that this was a protest against human trafficking.

IGFM/ISHR International Society for Human Rights: Blacklighter

igfmblacklighter

All over the world, governments exert too much control over the press. They were asked to draw attention to these violations of the right to free speech, and to do it as cheaply as posible, since the “International Society for Human Rights” needs every cent it has for the battle against censorship. They substituted the bright yellow ink of a highlighter pen with dense, black ink and distributed these modified pens to journalists attending a press conference held by the ISHR on the subject of ‘Freedom of the press at the 2008 Olympic Games’. Instead of highlighting a text, the marking pens left behind a censor bar on the paper. Shortly after the press conference, the site views of www.igfm.de, the german department of the ISHR increased by 28%. They also received 50% more requests than usual from journalists seeking informative literature about censorship.

International Human Rights Day: Biscuit

To commemorate International Human Rights Day, Amnesty International Hong Kong and other social groups organized a street exhibition to remind people of persisting human rights problems around the world, where enormous efforts have still to be made. A rope is used to hang the man in the biscuit pack. People who donate money to Amnesty International can purchase this at the exhibition, and then untie the rope to save the man from hanging. A small booklet attached lightheartedly suggests other uses of rope.
